I have always backed Microsoft on their decision to charge for Xbox Live Gold. I felt that $4 a month was not a large price to pay for an excellent service such as Live. However, the following makes me wonder if the $4 is actually worth it. With millions of Xbox Live Gold members paying for the service, should they have to watch commercials as well? Would it be fair to make Silver members have commercials on their dashboard?
Now I have not seen any actual advertisements on my dashboard like this. I have seen video ads that play audio and video when they are “active” but those have always been for something new in the Marketplace or something new to Live. It has not been for something like cellphone providers or a beverage. If my dashboard starts dishing out commercials, then I may just have to forget renewing that annual membership when mine expires next.
Check out the following video and let us know what you think. Remember, we don’t know if this video comes from a Silver or Gold member. But watch it, comment, and let us know your thoughts on commercials coming to the dashboard.

I still think XBL for $50 a year and covering pretty much any online game beats the heck out of… say.. WOW… Or DC Comics online, on the “free” PS3 network for $20 a month and just a single game.
Yes, it’s a bit of a pain, but not too much more than the Doritos, Mountain Dew, Adidas, AT&T and all the other ads they’ve been running for the last couple years in increasing numbers.
I guess if the ads keep it at $4 a month versus $20 a month per game I’m willing to be a little less curmudgeonly.
Say, BTW, I wanted to congratulate you on that great Ned Beatty (from Deliverance) impression you did a couple of times in the new podcast (talking about the NVG) from Modern Combat 2). I think that’s a sound byte I’ll keep for playing whenever a program crashes.
